The paper focuses on the divergence of the data derived from research into English and Russian phraseography that concentrated on the origin of the phraseological units, or more precisely on its authorship. We will look specifically at the origin of the popular phrase borrowed from English, a nation of shopkeeper.r. There is a difference between the source language (English) and the recipient language (Russian) in tenns of the generally accepted attribution of the phrase.
