The hygienist discourse established a progressive medicalization of the urban space throughout the 19th century. With this the doctors became not only the first managers of the collective space, but also those responsible for defining the residential typologies that had to configure a new city. The population growth experienced by Seville in the last decades of this century subjected the houses of the historic center to a process of densification, motivated by the overcrowding of the existing residential buildings. This progressive accumulation of the lower classes in corrales and casas de partido, with the consequent deterioration of the sanitary conditions, led to numerous proposals designed to clean up as much as possible the historic city. The Estudios médico-topográficos de Sevilla (1882-84), by Philipp Hauser, and the Tratado de higiene (1917-25), by Antonio Salvat, both doctors active in Seville in those years, illustrate the hygienist discourse in the Andalusian capital. This paper, starting from the available bibliography, review the impact that this discourse had on the renovation of the Sevillian housing policies between the 19th and 20th centuries.
