« Pour Romantisme » (1971-1980)

    This paper evokes the first decade of our journal’s existence (1971-1980), linked as it was to the creation of the Société des études romantiques (Society for the study of romanticism) a year earlier by Pierre Barbéris and a group of teacher-scholars representing a variety of university institutions. The paper evokes the way the journal functioned when it was published twice yearly and its last pages mainly chronicled the research in romanticism and the 19th century, which were then particularly ebullient. The way this first Romantisme thought about romanticism and its “impossible unity”, in a spirit of pluri-disciplinarity and internationalism, with primary focus on its philosophy, is considered. But the journal also manifested a kind of collective commitment in favour of romanticism, as the title and platform of the editorial of its first issue testifies – “Pour Romantisme” – “For Romanticism, For Romantisme”

    Cet article évoque la toute première décennie d’existence de notre revue (1971-1980), liée de naissance à la Société des études romantiques fondée sous ce nom l’année précédente sous l’impulsion de Pierre Barbéris et d’un groupe d’enseignants-chercheurs représentant diverses instances universitaires. Est évoqué son fonctionnement en une période où la revue est d’abord bisannuelle et où ses dernières pages tiennent la chronique d’une recherche sur le Romantisme et le XIXe siècle alors particulièrement effervescente. Est envisagé comment ce premier Romantisme pense le Romantisme et son « impossible unité », dans un esprit pluridisciplinaire et internationaliste, et en mettant l’accent d’abord sur sa philosophie. Mais c’est aussi une sorte d’engagement collectif qui s’y manifeste en faveur du Romantisme, comme en témoigne le titre-mot d’ordre de l’éditorial du premier numéro – « Pour Romantisme »
