    El trabajo centra su interés en el análisis de uno de los momentos más importantes en la incipiente conquista del Imperio Mexica, la batalla de Centla, acontecida el 15 de marzo de 1519 en lo que hoy es Frontera, Tabasco, por cuanto puede ser considerada como el primer episodio formal de dicha conquista, ya que en dicho enfrentamiento armado se produjeron los primeros efectos del choque entre Occidente y Mesoamérica. Efectivamente, se trató del primer encuentro de carácter militar, ordenado y formal, entre las huestes castellanas y los nativos mesoamericanos. Es necesario, por ello, desentrañar los condicionantes e implicaciones sociales de la confrontación, la narrativa y el discurso utilizado por sus protagonistas o las principales características históricas y militares de una batalla que influyó decisivamente en el devenir de la ulterior conquista de México, entre otros aspectos por la aparición en escena de una figura tan destacada como fue la de Malitzin (La Malinche) o por las noticias que recibieron los españoles en Centla acerca del imponente Imperio Mexica.

    The paper focuses its interest on the analysis of one of the most important moments in the incipient conquest of the Mexica Empire, the Battle of Centla, which took place on March 15 of 1519 in the current city of Frontera, Tabasco, as it can be considered as the first formal episode of the conquest of Mexico, because in that armed confrontation the first effects of the clash between Europe and Mesoamerica occurred.

    Indeed, it was the first military encounter, orderly and formal, between the “huestes castellanas” and the natives of Mesoamerica. It is necessary, therefore, to unravel the conditioning and social implications of the confrontation, the narrative and the discourse used by its protagonists or the main historical and military characteristics of a battle that decisively influenced the future of the subsequent conquest of Mexico. Among other aspects, by the appearance on stage of a figure as prominent as that of Malitzin (La Malinche), or by the news that the Spaniards received in Centla about the incredible Mexican Empire
