    Félix María Calleja del Rey Nació en Medina del Campo en 1753.

    Siendo joven tomó parte en diversas campañas y ostentó diferentes cargos hasta que pasó a la Nueva España acompañando al conde de Revillagigedo en 1789. Algún tiempo después le fue encomendadas la misión de reconocimiento y militarización de las “Provincias Internas”.

    Su dedicación y éxito en esta tarea le permitió ascender rápidamente y se le pidió que organizase e instruyese las recientemente formadas milicias de San Luis Potosí. Levantó los cuerpos provinciales de dragones de San Luis y San Carlos y se ocupó de entrenarlos en el arte de la guerra. Poco a poco ganó en la zona prestigio y reconocimiento.

    En los primeros momentos de la Guerra de Independencia, Calleja tomó diversas medidas para proteger la zona. A continuación, se encargó de alistar voluntarios con los que formó nuevas tropas, compuestas por las capas más humildes de la sociedad local y una oficialidad criolla. El ejército de Calleja fue el primero en ser capaz de vencer a los insurgentes. En menos de un mes consiguió reclutar y entrenar una fuerza de tres mil hombres, con los que se enfrentó y venció, en las primeras etapas de la guerra a las tropas de la insurgencia, creando casi desde la nada un ejército que fue el “germen” del ejército novohispano posterior.

    Félix María Calleja del Rey was born in Medina del Campo in 1753.

    As a young man he took part in several campaigns and held different positions, until he moved to New Spain with the Conde de Revillagigedo in 1789. Some time later he was entrusted the reformation of several bodies of the “milicias” in the “Provincias Internas”. His good doing in this role meant him a promotion and the commission, in 1796, to organize and instruct the “milicias” formed shortly before in San Luis Potosí. He launched the provincial Dragons regiments of San Luis and San Carlos. Training these military forces.

    Little by little he got to be recognized as a character of great power and prestige. At the beginning of the Mexican war of independence, Calleja took several measures to protect the area.
