Tras la debacle de Rusia, el emperador de los franceses decidió levantar un nuevo ejército para dirigirse con él a Centroeuropa. Frente a él se organizó una nueva coalición impulsada con el dinero de Londres. Las fuerzas imperiales en la península quedaron a la defensiva con la misión de emplear el invierno, a la espera de la ofensiva de primavera de Wellington, para combatir a las fuerzas guerrilleras del norte. Los retrasos se acumularon, las divisiones destacadas no volvieron a tiempo y, cuando por fin se produjo la ofensiva aliada, la fuerza imperial tuvo que replegarse hasta el Ebro sin poder presentar batalla. Wellington, que había diseñado una estrategia de inspiración logística, pudo avanzar sin contratiempos hasta el noroeste de Burgos y enlazar con el puerto de Santander. El rey José, dubitativo e incapaz de entrar en comunicación con el ejército imperial del Norte, se replegó a la Llanada Alavesa sin desplegar adecuadamente para presentar batalla.
El generalísimo inglés vio la oportunidad y se lanzó como un leopardo sobre su presa, envolviendo a su oponente por la izquierda, cortándole así la retirada por la carretera de Francia. La fuerza imperial estuvo muy cerca de ser completamente envuelta y destruida, pero unos fallos de coordinación del ala izquierda aliada lo impidieron. El ejército del hermano de Napoleón se retiró hacia Pamplona abandonando toda la artillería, los carromatos y el tesoro.
