There is a growing interest among teachers and researchers in adopting aspects of criterion‐referenced testing in schools, particularly for the purpose of diagnostic assessment. This article outlines the strategies developed by the authors for such a diagnostic testing approach within the context of the Scottish O grade biology course. Also described is the use made of a microcomputer‐based marking and reporting system using a software package called SCRIBE. This package enables the class teacher to obtain prompt feedback on the attainment of individual students, as well as information essential for the effective evaluation of the teaching and testing procedures used.
