Resumen de «Carácter nacional» español y diplomacia cultural nacionalsocialista

Marició Janué i Miret

Representations of «national character» have played an important role in contemporary European cultural diplomacy, being associated with the destiny of peoples in Europe and the world. After the defeat in the First World War, Germany made Spain a priority objective of its foreign cultural policy, which was accompanied by a boom in German Hispanic studies. Noteworthy German Hispanists theorized about the essence of Spanish character and its significance in a European context. Also during National Socialism, prestigious German Hispanists examined the character of the Spanish nation and hispanidad, which they captured in monographs and articles. Although these were written with scientific pretensions in mind, the authors also aspired to acquire publicity and exert political influence. The article analyses these publica- tions by exploring the discursive mechanisms used to adapt the charac- ter of the Spanish nation to national socialist interests.
