    Los códigos de omertà (ley del silencio) y vendetta (venganza) funcionan como instituciones económicas de las organizaciones criminales. La omertà gestiona los costes de información en los negocios de dichas organizaciones y la vendetta refuerza el cumplimiento de los acuerdos en ellos. Ambos se refuerzan mutuamente y hacen posible el buen desempeño de dichos negocios a pesar de desarrollarse en un entorno muy hostil. Esto contribuye a explicar la persistencia de estos negocios y la fortaleza de las organizaciones criminales que los gestionan. En delitos como el narcotráfico esto se traduce en que el lado de la oferta es muy resistente y, si la demanda es solvente, el negocio es inevitable y muy rentable. La política criminal convencional, centrada en atacar la oferta, resulta insuficiente; o se reduce la demanda o se articula de otro modo el nexo entre ambas.

    The codes of omertà (law of silence) and vendetta (revenge) function as economic institutions of criminal organizations. The omertà manages the information costs in the businesses of these organizations and the vendetta reinforces the fulfillment of agreements in them. Both reinforce each other and make possible the good performance of these businesses despite developing in a very hostile environment. This helps explain the persistence of these businesses and the strength of the criminal organizations that manage them. In crimes such as drug trafficking this translates in that the supply side is very resistant and, if the demand is solvent, the business is inevitable and very profitable. The conventional criminal policy, focused on attacking the offer, is insufficient; or the demand is reduced or the link between the two is articulated in another way.
