The realist ambition supposes that language can give an image of reality whose adequacy will be judged according to precision in vocabulary or detail. Reading becomes seeing : a character's vision both motivates description and gives it verisimilitude. Citing words doubles the effect of textual realism, to abolish for an instant the distinction between a sign and its referent. However Simon 's usage does not only produce such an effect, but also renders the perception of a reality where language has a place.
