This study aimed at verifying the main skills that the leaders of the Polícia Judiciária use mostly and, at the same time, which of them are positively related with higher performance and contribute to the satisfaction and well-being of its employees. The research methodology used had three phases: bibliographical research; qualitative research, assessed through content analysis of a structured interview and quantitative research, which statistically analyzed data obtained from the application of a questionnaire, adapted by Rouco (2012). It has been found that the leadership competencies most used by the leaders of the PJ Units are transparency, human relationship, communication, interpersonal relations, technical and professional skills, decision making, guidance for the task, vision and, a competence not identified in the model: motivation. It was concluded that the leaders’ skills related to the management of the PJ Units, the existence of a vision, together with interpersonal relationship skills, are those that present themselves as the ones that contribute to a better performance of their leaders and to a greater satisfaction and well-being of their employees
