The verb ter + past participle in the Portuguese language presents two morphosyntactic configurations: the first, and most common, is the formation of tenses composed of a verb; the second is a predicate, usually of the direct complement, in which the past participle has the function of adjective. The first configuration, that is, the formation of compound tenses, is considered by grammarians a relatively recent phenomenon in the Portuguese language. In this study, we will try to determine if there are significant occurrences of the use of compound tenses with the verb ter in the books printed in Portuguese at the end of the 15th century.
