For Poulain, the writings of St Teresa of Avila, with their analysis of states preceding ecstasy, are a landmark in the development of the scientific study of mystical consciousness. Are there parallel portrayals of the states of consciousness and degrees of perfection in ancient Ethiopian literature? What can be said of mystical union in Ethiopian spiritual tradition? This paper presents surprising parallels between Saint Teresa’s degrees of perfection and ancient Ethiopian mystical writings.
