Kate O´Brien tuvo una su vida controvertida que en algunos aspectos recuerda ala de Sta. Teresa de Jesús, cuyo «retrato personal» trazó en Teresa de Ávila (1951). Debido los problemas de la escritora irlandesa con la censura y al perfil heterodoxo del texto, nunca se llegó a traducir al español cuando se publicó por primera vez. En este ensayo estudio, en primer lugar, hasta qué punto la biografía de Sta. Teresa escrita por O´Brien se ajusta a las categorías de hagiografía y biografía. En segundo lugar, abordo la forma en que O´Brien sitúa a la santa católica en el contexto de la Reforma Protestante.

Kate O’Brien had a controversial life which resembles in some ways that of St. Teresa of Jesus. Kate O’Brien’s «personal portrait» of the Spanish mystic (Teresa of Avila), was published in 1951. Due to O’Brien’s Spanish censorship records and the slightly heterodox profile of the biography, it was never translated into Spanish when it first appeared. In this essay I explore, firstly, whether O´Brien´s biography of Teresa fits in or subverts to the categories of hagiography and biography; and, secondly, O’Brien´s placing of the Catholic saint in the context of the Protestant Reformation.
