This article researches the relationship between the city and the countryside in films produced during the 1920s in Recife, the capital of the northeastern state of Pernambuco, Brazil. It analyzes the representation of tradition, progress, and modernity, referring to the present as well as to the social and economic history of the state.
Este artigo investiga as relações entre campo e cidade em filmes realizados ao longo da década de 1920 na cidade do Recife, capital do estado de Pernambuco, no nordeste do Brasil. Procura-se analisar como os filmes trabalham concepções como modernidade, tradição e progresso, referindo-se tanto ao tempo presente quanto à história econômica e social do estado.
