Resumen de El pueblo Mapuche y la Capitanía General de Chile: guerra y comercio en la frontera del Bío Bío

En el año 1541 los españoles se asentaron en las tierras chilenas constituyendo la Capitanía General de Chile, la cual perduró hasta la fecha de 1810. Durante este largo periodo, los mapuche, el pueblo originario existente en esta región, resistió los intentos de dominación hispanos, desarrollándose independiente en las áreas pampeanas y al sur del río Bío Bío, que ejerció, desde el siglo XVI, de frontera entre ambos mundos. Pese a la existencia de esta frontera, hasta épocas muy recientes la historiografía denominaba al periodo de presencia española en el Reino de Chile “la Guerra de Arauco”, afirmando que las relaciones interétnicas habían estado constantemente determinadas por la guerra. Ulteriormente, nuevos estudios evidenciaron que con la instauración de esta frontera, las relaciones fronterizas habían relegado la guerra en la región. A tenor de lo expresado, con el presente trabajo deseamos indagar en la naturaleza de esas relaciones fronterizas, así como en el conjunto de las relaciones interétnicas que se fueron edificando entre los españoles y los mapuche durante todos estos años.

In 1541, the spanish settled in chilean lands constituting the General Captaincy of Chile, which lasted until 1810. During this long period, the mapuche, the indigenous people existing in this region, resisted the attempts of domination from the hispanics, they developed independently in the pampas areas and south of the Bio Bio river, which exercised, since the sixteenth century, the border between both worlds. Despite the existence of this border, until very recently the historiography called the period of spanish presence in the Kingdom of Chile the “Arauco War”, stating that interethnic relations had always been determined by the war. Subsequently, further studies showed that with the establishment of this border, border relations had relegated to the war in the region. In light of the above, with the present work we wish to inquire into the nature of these border relations as well as in the whole of interethnic relations that were built between the spanish and the mapuche over the years.
