Orreaga Ibarra Murillo

The aim of this article is to trace the relationship among three languages present in the border of Navarre: Basque, Castilian and French. More precisely, the aim is to examine these three languages and recent developments since the mid-twentieth century to our present day focusing especially on the lexical level.

We analyze the lexicon from the French Basque of Zugarramurdi, the westernmost point, and the lexicon of the valleys of Baztan, Erro and Luzaide. We also analyze the remains of Basque in Castilian of Navarre and of the Anso Valley and the impact of the French language in the Basque of the northern Basque Country.

Moreover, as a result of this contact, changing Basque phonological features will be analyzed. Finally, we look at how this evolution is today and whether this influence remains. The methodology is based on tracking dialectal dictionaries, and Basque dialectal monographs on the one hand, but also on the thorough analysis of items compiled.
