Óscar López Zaldívar, Amparo Verdú Vázquez, Tomás Gil López, Rafael Vicente Lozano Diez

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the degree of competence in using and understanding Building InformationModeling (BIM), of construction undergraduates at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, from the beginning of theirdegrees until they get their first jobs. In order to achieve this, a survey was carried out of students from the fourConstruction Engineering year groups. The analyzed sample comprised 336 students (approximately 25% of all thoseregistered). The results obtained indicate that the level of knowledge about BIM is less than 43% whilst 18% claim that theydo not know what it is for. Despite the low percentage of knowledge, there is a high level of motivation, given that morethan 98% of those surveyed express an interest in learning how to use it. Meanwhile, the absence of regulations, the lack ofdevelopment of standard protocols of action and the perceived lack of profitability from using the tool during the period ofeducation contribute towards students putting off learning it.
