The authors reflect on high rates of incarceration and associated health problems in the U.S. and on the need for a reform of the U.S. criminal justice system. They suggest that an overreliance on the criminal justice system has taken place in an effort to respond to several social problems and resulted in mass incarceration. They argue that addressing the consequences of mass incarceration is a public health challenge and will require leadership, interagency collaboration, education and change.
