Resumen de Les reliefs de Chiusi: Mise à jour de nos connaissances

Jean-René Jannot

  • The small archaic tombs of Chiusi, almost always carved in bas relief on the local soft stone (pietra fetida) have for 25 years been in the collection of the École française. In this corpus, a number of monuments or fragments had been overlooked, others have recently appeared, and several which had been regarded as genuine, are most likely forgeries. This brief study presents twenty complete or fragmented monuments and places them in the earlier general classification. The distribution of these reliefs covers a broad area, ranging from Arezzo to Perugia and from Siena to the Colline Metallifere and the high valley of Ombrone. The production covers half a century from the end of the sixth century to the first third of the fifth. The imagery that develops shows the funerary rites and customs of the aristocratic society at the time of Porsenna.
