Pietro Belo, fiscale del Sant'Uffizio: sugli inizi dellattività della Congregazione

Resumen

Riassunto: Il saggio ricostruisce la biografia di Pietro Belo, un giurista laico che fu uomo di fiducia di Paolo IV e fiscale della Congregazione del SantUffizio romano dopo la sua morte. Il volume manoscritto che riporta i suoi consulti stilati per lInquisizione dal 1548 al 1571, conservato alla Biblioteca Vaticana, è una fonte poco utilizzata ma assai preziosa per delineare quali fossero le competenze del fiscale, per comprendere le strategie giudiziarie di Carafa, prima e durante il suo regno, e per delineare il suo tentativo di estendere i poteri del tribunale riguardo a materie come la pretesa santità, la simonia, limmoralità del clero e la sodomia.

Abstract: The essay reconstructs the biography of Pietro Belo, a lay jurist who was a man of trust of Paul IV and fiscale of the Congregation of the Roman Holy Office after his death. The manuscript volume that contains his consultations drawn up for the Inquisition from 1548 to 1571, kept in the Vatican Library, was poorly used but is a very precious source to outline what the fiscals competences were, to understand Carafas judicial strategies, before and during his reign, and to outline his attempt to extend the powers of the tribunal on matters such as alleged sanctity, simony, immorality of the clergy and sodomy.
