Gansu province sets graphite mining cap

  • The local government of China’s Gansu province will suspend approvals of new non-metallic mineral projects, including those involving graphite, to ease its overcapacity problem, it said.Although there is no mining limit on graphite ores in the province’s policy, unlike barytes and fluorspar, there is a minimum mining capacity to prevent larger mines from producing in small volumes. “Local governments are spending more money to encourage the discovery of more graphite resources but setting a minimum mining capacity is a right thing to do - otherwise there will be too many small producers and then a price war again,” he said.
