Resumen de La competencia en el sector bancario español: una aproximación regional

En este artículo se realiza un análisis de los vínculos entre los factores regionales y la rentabilidad de las entidades de depósito desde una perspectiva temporal ámplia (1986-1998). Los resultados de las estimaciones con datos longitudinales -que permiten combinar elanálisis de corte transversal y serie temporal- sugieren que el desarrollo económico de las regiones donde operan las entidades de depósito, la tasa de crecimiento de estos mercados y el carácter urbano/rural de éstos, junto con el grado de especialización de la entidad financiera, afectan de forma significativa a la rentabilidad de las instituciones bancarias. Sin embargo, no se encuentra una evidencia clara respecto a la influencia del grado de concentración y el tamaño de la entidad.

In this article we carry out an analysis of the links between regional factors and performance of deposit entities from a broad time standpoint (1986-1998).The results of the estimations with longitudinal data-which enable cross-sectional and time sequence analysis to be combined - suggest that the economic development of the regions where the deposit entities operate, the growth rate of these markets and their urban/rural character, together with the degree of specialisation of the financial entity, have a significant effect on the cost-effectiveness of banking institutions. There is no clear evidence, however, regarding the influence of the degree of concentration and size of the entity.
