Food Security is an important pillar for international peace and security insofar as it is a factor, among others, in mitigation, stabilization or conflict prevention.
Food Security may be weakened or disminished by an ongoing conflict, the effects of climate change or the arrival of displaced persons or refugees from other places. At the same time, the lack of Food Security can give rise to conflicts and cause people to travel for food, and it is also linked to the worsening of climate change in relation to the development of intensive and sustainable agricultural practices in the food industry.
In this context, unilateral State responses and actions are sometimes not sufficient, or complete, to meet these new challenges. Effective collective measures, through collaboration and coordination between States and International Organizations, can be more comprehensive in preventing or eliminating threats to international peace and security. In this regard, Peacekeeping Operations can contribute to this collaboration as one of the existing instruments for the maintenance of international peace and security.
