Resumen de Bauxite and Alumina 2016: : Metallica pushes on with Guyana abrasive bauxite

Myles McCormick

  • The company expects a positive reception of its application and hopes to restart the 125,000 tpa abrasive grade bauxite operation within 18 months. "The first thing we did was a detailed inspection of the calciner. We know everything that is needed to bring it back into operation," added [Sylvester Carmichael]. "We have have previously done an evaluation of the mines. And we have a detailed cost evaluation of what you can produce." The new government in the South American nation, however, is more receptive to Metallica's proposals. "Much of the necessary infrastructure is still there," Carmichael, adding: "But there are parts you cannot get off the shelf." "With the recent change in the North American refinery situations of course there are more opportunities opening," Henning Stams, Almatis CEO, told IM. While each of the refineries produce largely metallurgical grade alumina, they also supply significant volumes of non-metallurgical material. Port Comfort traditionally produced around 20% chemical grade products, while Sherwin's Texas facility and Noranda's Gramercy (both of which currently remain in production)
