Resumen de China's nonmetallic mineral industry faces up to new normal

Albert Li

  • China's nonmetallic mineral industry will need to become greener, more efficient and establish stronger links across the supply chain to keep in step with the country's revised industrial policy, delegates at the China International High Tech Development Association Conference in Jian, Shandong province, heard at the end of December.

Exports have additionally been hit by slowing demand and falling prices, while China's competitiveness as a mineral producer is also declining due to rising production costs, resource and export taxes and the emergence of new low-cost mineral suppliers in Mongolia, India, Pakistan and Egypt.

Issues such as wastefulness of mineral resources through inefficient mining and processing mean that even China's richest deposits fall short of their potential revenues, while insufficient exploration data means that the country still does not know the scale or the value of its mineral reserves.
