    La economía social está teniendo un mayor reconocimiento en cuanto a su contribución al desarrollo y la cohesión social de los diferentes países y su papel complementario a los sistemas de bienestar existentes. Por otro lado, el sistema de bienestar en España y en Europa ha experimentado profundos cambios a comienzo de este siglo, algunos se deben a decisiones políticas y otros a las transformaciones sociales. Así, el objetivo de este artículo es mostrar los argumentos teóricos y empíricos que avalan la afirmación de que la economía social apoya y complementa los sistemas de bienestar. Para ello en el artículo se definen las principales características de la economía social, se presentan una selección desde la perspectiva teórica sobre las contribuciones de la economía social y se realiza un breve diagnóstico de la situación del sistema de bienestar en España, mostrando las experiencias y potencialidades de la economía social.

    Social economy is having a greater recognition in terms of its contribution to the development and the social cohesion of existing countries and its role as complementary to welfare systems.

    On the other hand, the welfare systems in Spain and in Europe have experienced profound changes at beginning of this Century, some are due to political decisions and other social chan- ges. Thus, the objective of this article is to show the theoretical and empirical arguments that support the assertion that the social economy supports and complements the welfare systems.

    This article defines the main characteristics of the social economy, presents a selection from the theoretical perspective concerning the contributions of the social economy and held a brief diagnosis of the situation of the welfare system in Spain, showing the experience and potential of the social economy.
