La encomienda en Yucatán sobrevivió hasta 1821 aproximadamente.
Ya desde el siglo xvii la institución había entrado en crisis al empezar a decrecer las rentas, sin embargo era un título bastante buscado porque en esta provincia periférica de la América espanola ˜ era de los pocos títulos de “nobleza” que se podían obtener. Se ha trabajado muy poco el papel de esta institución en sus últimos anos ˜ desde 1770 hasta el final, por lo que este artículo intenta llenar este hueco, poniendo un énfasis en las trayectorias de los encomenderos y las justificaciones esgrimidas por ellos para seguir gozando del título tan tardíamente
