Resumen de En torno a las incógnitas del álgebra: cosa, segunda cosa y cantidad. Análisis de una terminología matemática renacentista*

El objetivo del presente trabajo es revisar, analizar y estudiar el tratamiento etimológico, semántico y formal de los términos cosa, segunda cosa y cantidad, así como los métodos expuestos y divulgados por los algebristas hispanos más representativos del siglo XVI para la solución de las ecuaciones de primer y segundo grado con más de una incógnita, y dar cuenta, así, de sus esfuerzos por simplificar conceptos y allanar la terminología científico-técnica de un léxico, el algebraico, oculto –y, en buena parte, desconocido–, en aras de vulgarizar y democratizar susconocimientos.

The objective of this paper is to review, analyze and study the etymological, semantic and formal treatment of the terms thing [cosa], second thing [segunda cosa] and quantity [cantidad], as well as the methods disclosed and disseminated by the most representative algebraists hispanics in the S. XVI for solution of the equations of first and second degree with more than one unknown; and give an account, so, of their current efforts to simplify concepts and pave the scientific-technical terminology of algebraic lexicon, hidden –and, in large part, stranger–, the sake of popularize and democratize their knowledge.
