La profesionalización de las matemáticas en Colombia comenzó en 1950 en la Universidad Nacional. Antes de esta década la historia de las matemáticas en el país está directamente relacionada con la historia de la Escuela de Ingeniería de la Universidad Nacional en Bogotá, fundada en 1867, y con la Sociedad Colombiana de Ingenieros (SCI) fundada veinte años más tarde.
En la Escuela de Ingeniería se creó en 1888 el título de Profesor en Ciencias Matemáticas con el ánimo de estimular el estudio de esta disciplina; para obtener el título era necesario realizar una tesis.
Los Anales de Ingeniería, cuyo primer número apareció en agosto de 1888, son el órgano informativo de la SCI. Éste fue el principal medio de divulgación científica en Colombia durante el siglo XIX y los comienzos del XX, en el que las matemáticas en particular recibieron especial atención. Los artículos allí publicados y las tesis para obtener el título de Profesor constituyen la parte central de este trabajo.

The training of mathematicians in Colombia began in 1950 at the Universidad Nacional. Before this, the history of mathematics in Colombia was directly related to the history of two institutions: The Escuela de Ingeniería of the Universidad Nacional, founded in 1867, and the Sociedad Colombiana de Ingenieros, founded in 1887.
The Sociedad Colombiana de Ingenieros published the Anales de Ingeniería, the most important technical journal published in Colombia during the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th. There we can find the main mathematical production of Colombia in the 19th century, with the exception of the textbooks published by university professors.
The interest of the study of mathematics in Colombia in the 19th century led to the creation of the degree of Profesor en Ciencias Matemáticas at the Universidad Nacional in 1888. One of the requirements for graduation was to write a thesis. We found 36 of them (manuscripts) between 1891 and 1903. These thesis and the articles in the Anales de Ingeniería constitute the central part of our research.
