  This paper aims to provide a panoramic overview on the Portuguese military history, since the foundation of the ―Portucalense county‖ (in 1096) until the beginning of the Discoveries Age (with the rising of King Manuel I, in 1495). This study is divided into three periods: i) from 1096 to 1249 (when the Portuguese Reconquista was achieved and king Afonso III came to the throne); ii) from 1249 to 1367 (the beginning of Fernando‘s reign, the last monarch of the first dynasty, who engaged three wars against Castile); iii) from 1367 to 1495 (between Fernando and João II, the ―Perfect Prince‖). In each one of this periods, we shall consider five items: i) military recruitment; ii) the evolution of command posts; iii) arms and armour; iv) ways of making the war; v) castles and siege warfare.

  Este trabalho pretende fornecer uma visão panorâmica da história militar portuguesa, desde a fundação do Condado Portucalense (em 1096) até ao início da era dos Descobrimentos, com a subida ao trono do rei D. Manuel I (1495). O estudo encontra-se dividido em três etapas: i) de 1096 a 1249 (data do termo da Reconquista portuguesa, e da entronização de D. Afonso III); ii) de 1249 a 1367 (início do reinado de D. Fernando, o último monarca da primeira dinastia, que ficou ligado a três guerras luso-castelhanas); iii) de 1367 a 1495 (entre D. Fernando e D. João II, o «Príncipe Perfeito»). Em cada uma destas etapas, são analisados cinco aspetos: i) recrutamento militar; ii) evolução dos cargos de comando; iii) armamento; iv) tipo de guerra praticado; v) arquitetura militar e guerra de cerco.
