Resumen de História da linguística

E. F. Konrad Koerner

The development of the history of linguistics as a serious scholarly activity has a long history which can traced in textbooks from mid-19th to the mid-20th century. It is, however, only since the 1970s that the history of linguistics/language sciences has developed into a subdiscipline of linguistics in general and a subject to which the beginning student of the discipline would be introduced as part and parcel of his/her education. In this article four main approaches to writing the history of linguistics are distinguished and discussed: I, the summing-up history, which presents the results of established procedures within the discipline; II, the revolutionary history intended as propaganda for a new paradigm; III, the non-partisan constructive history, which emphasizes continuity and progress in the discipline; and IV, the historiography of linguistics, a relatively new approach that seeks to treat the history of linguistics as a scholarly endeavour in its own right which may also inform work in other linguistic subdisciplines.
