The relationship between the emperors and the Senate during the time of the Principate occupies an important part of the historiographical debate on the period. This article addresses the issue focusing on the passage between the first and second centuries A. D., when the already established imperial system still depended on many of the republican institutions, especially those represented by the senatorial order, whose members, jealous of Stoic moral ideas and traditional political ideas, as uirtus and mos maiorum, contrasted and supported, ambiguously, the imperial power. Within this context, the discourse of Pliny the Younger, the Panegyric of Trajan, offers to analysis many elements that made the search for balance between the Caesars and the curia. In it he built, around the Emperor Trajan's figure, the idealized image of the ruler from the senatorial optics.
