  Juníper Serra, nascut a Petra (Mallorca), professor en Sant Francesc de Mallorca i de la UniversitatLul·liana, pertany a una tradició missionera d’inspiració lul·liana, canalitzada per Antoni Llinàs, creadorde col·legis per a missions, com el d’Escornalbou. Una colla de mallorquins anaren a Amèrica, iallà seguiren la tradició missionera, d’aprenentatge de les llengües dels indis, i s’inspiraren en l’Escolade Salamanca, pel que fa al tracte humà dels indis, encara que segons els modes del temps. Novan discutir la legitimitat de la colonització. Contemporanis dels pares dels Estats Units d’Amèrica delNord, hostils a les ètnies nord-americanes, Serra i els missioners representaven una tradició diversa,quant als drets humans. Per als cristians antics va organitzar les missions populars, i va trasplantarmoltes celebracions litúrgiques i devocions, que anaven unides a la teatralització de les grans celebracionsde l’any litúrgic.

  Juníper Serra, born in Petra (Majorca) and a professor in the College of St Francesc in Majorca and at the Universitat Lul·liana, belongs to a missionary tradition inspired by Ramon Lull and channelled Antoni Llinàs, who was the creator of the missionary colleges, such as the one at Escornalbou. A group of Majorcans went to America where they followed the missionary tradition in learning the local languages of the Indians, and were inspired by the Salamanca School in their humanitarian treatment of the Indians, within the limits of the customs of the time. They did not discuss the legitimacy of colonization. Though contemporaries of the fathers of the USA who were hostile to the North-American races, Serra and the missionaries represented a different approach to human rights. For the first Christians, they organized popular missions and transplanted many liturgical and devotional celebrations which were linked to thedramatizationof the great celebrations of the liturgical year.
