This paper analyzes the main topics of Alemán’s first-person discourse in Ortografía castellana; it particularly studies the probably most complex material of Alemán’s self-fashioning, i. e., his relationship to Seville, which can be read as a denial of the mother and as a symbolic orphanhood; it concludes that Alemán found in the capital of New Spain a symbolic new mother, and that he eventually developed from his new home a liberating first-person discourse.
