    La compleja relación mantenida por Mérimée con el teatro español del Siglo de Oro plantea tres preguntas íntimamente unidas. En primer lugar, ¿qué conocimiento concreto tuvo el autor de Carmen de uno de los tres grandes teatros que inventó la Europa moderna? A continuación ¿qué opinión fue la suya al respecto? Finalmente, ¿cuál ha sido el impacto de este teatro en su obra personal? A cada una de estas tres preguntas el presente artículo se propone contestar.

    The complex relationship between Mérimée and Golden Age theather poses three questions that are closely related. In first place, what was the specific knowledge of Carmen's author from one of the three most outstanding theathers invented by Modern Europe? Then, what was his opinion about it? And finally, what is the impact of this theather on his own works? We expect to answer these three questions in the present article.
