    Au début du XIIe s., l'attente d'Arthur s'affirme parmi les Bretons installés en Armorique et ceux demeurés en Galles ou en Cornouailles. Cette affirmation de patriotisme brittonique naît dans le peuple ; elle trouve son origine dans l'intégration de la figure du roi Arthur dans la littérature prophétique traditionnelle. Elle défiera un temps le pouvoir des Plantagenêt (notamment en Bretagne où la duchesse Constance impose le nom du grand roi disparu à son fils né en 1187, en dépit des ordres d'Henri II) qui s'efforceront de la combattre avec succès. Cette enquête sur l'espoir breton permet de souhaiter qu'elle soit prolongée : la croyance dans la survie outre-tombe de certains bons rois caractérise en effet les aspirations de plusieurs peuples médiévaux qui attendent le retour victorieux d'un souverain prestigieux en cas de difficultés graves.

    At the beginning of the twelfth century, the wait for the coming of Arthur strengthened amongst the Bretons settled in Armorica and those who had stayed in Wales or in Cornwall. This assertion of Brythonic patriotism was born amongst the people. It originated in the integration of king Arthur's figure into traditional prophetic literature and for some time, it was to challenge the power of the Plantagenets — in particular in Brittany where duchess Constance was to insist that her son born in 1187 should take the narae of the great dead king despite Henri II's orders — who would successfully strive against it. This survey on the Breton aspirations allows us to wish it to be prolonged : the belief in the survival beyond the grave of some great kings is actually characteristic of the aspirations of several medieval peoples who were waiting for the victorious return of a renowned monarch in the event of a time of crisis.
