    Frequently the academic philosophy has assigned a negative value to the greck sophists, contemporaneous to Socrates, that arise in Athens in the fifth centuty B. C. In oposition to these traditional images, the present essay bring forward elements to build an interpretation in which the sophists are caracterized as thinkers of great capacity, and social innovators of evident influence not only in their period but with respect to the following centuries. It is set out that they were masters educators with a solid management of the knowledge of their time, linked to the problems of politics and culture, that contribute with a new sense to the concept of education.

    Con frecuencia la filosofía académica ha asignado un valor negativo a los sofistas griegos, contemporáneos de Sócrates, que surgen en Atenas en el siglo V a.C. En oposición a esta imagen tradicional, el presente ensayo aporta elementos para construir una interpretación en la que los sofistas son caracterizados como pensadores de gran capacidad, e innovadores sociales de evidente influencia tanto en su época como respecto a los siglos posteriores. Se postula que fueron maestros educadores con un sólido manejo del saber de su tiempo, vinculados a los problemas de la política y la cultura, que aportaron un nuevo sentido al concepto de educación.
