El presente trabajo se centra en el descubrimiento de la epigrafía romana en los siglos xv y xvi y las inscripciones, consideradas por los humanistas «la palabra viva de los romanos». El caso del portugués Aquiles Estaço es bastante ilustrativo de este fenómeno, ya que sus intereses fueron los mismos que los de otras personalidades de su tiempo. Perteneció a un contexto concreto y a través de su obra se puede comprobar la interacción entre humanistas y el intercambio de ideas y de información.

The study focuses into the discovery of Roman epigraphy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and Latin inscriptions, considered by the humanists «the living word of the Romans». The case of the Portuguese humanist Aquiles Estaço, Achilles Statius Lusitanus, is quite illustrative of this phenomenon, since his interests were the same of most European scholars of the period. He belonged to a concrete context so that the interaction between humanists, the exchange of ideas and information can be seen through his papers.
