  XIX. mende bukaeran jaiotako arrantzaleekin egindako elkarrizketetan oinarrituta, arrantzaren mekanizazi oaren aurretik, hau da, 1912. urtetik aurrera gertatutako motorren orokortzearen aurretik, txalupekin eta t raineruekin egiten zen arrantza eta nabigazioaren inguruko info rmazio oso eta fidagarria lortu dugu. Erabiltzen zir en ontzi motak batelak, potinak, traineruak eta, batez ere, txalupak ziren. Azken hauek 45 oinetako luzera, 9ko zabalera eta 4ko puntala izan ohi zuten.   En base a entrevistas con pescadores de Bermeo nacido s a finales del siglo XIX, hemos obtenido una descripción fiable y completa sobre la pesca y nave gación en chalupas y traineras antes de la mecaniza ción de la actividad con la generalización de los motores a partir de 1912. Los tipos de embarcaciones utiliza das eran botes, potines, traineras y, de modo especial, chal upas. Éstas medían 45 pies de eslora, 9 de manga y 4 de puntal. Arbolaban dos palos, el mayor y el trinquete en los que se izaban ocho tipos de velas. Describi mos la pesca del besugo y la merluza en las 16 calas de nu estra costa. La pesca del bonito en su migración ve raniega por el Golfo de Bizkaia, los tipos de aparejos, su t ransporte y comercialización. La pesca de la anchoa , que aparece en primavera y verano, y que tenía diferent es modalidades de captura: driben, ardorie, mandxugie, masitzetie ysartidie.   Based on interviews to Bermeo (Biscay) fishermen born at the end of XIXth century, we have obtained a relia ble and complete description on fishing and sailing in shallops and drifters before mechanization of the a ctivity with the widespread of engines from 1912. The types of v essels used were “botes”, “potines”, “traineras” an d especially “chalupas”, these measuring 45 feet in l ength, 9 breadth and 4 depth and carrying two masts , the mainmast and the foremast, on which eight types of sails were hoisted. We describe the fishing of red sea bream and hake in the 16 secluded fishing grounds of our coast. Tuna fishing during their summer migration b y the Biscay Bay including types of fishing gears, transpo rtation and commercialization is also described as well as anchovy fishing in spring and summer with different modes of capture: “driben”, “ardorie”, ”mandxugie”, “masitzetie”and “sartidie”. Some toponymic data, festive calendar, rituals and an extensive bibliography on fishing and navigation in Bermeo complete this article
