Abstract

Feminist theory has provided important conceptual and methodological tools influencing Film Studies. In this text these influences, along with fundamental aspects of Feminist Film studies, will be introduced using canonical texts. In addition, I will use secondary sources that i feel suggestive for my line of reasoning. In this article I will focus on presenting the dominant trends in feminist theory and film studies in every period. Nevertheless, mainstream trends do not exclude the coexistence of different ways of understanding gender issues in cinema. In any case, it is worth mentioning that all perspectives support a common background, a shared concern on the social stratifications from gender constructions that cinema reflects and produces and the dynamics of control and domination that these endure. The aim is mapping the situation, collecting in chronological order the contributions in this field in order to generate a thread of continuity that explains the discourses that operate today on this topic.

Keywords: gender representations, Feminist Film Theory, theoretical perspectives,
