El humanismo derivado de la concepción cristiana del hombre entrará en crisis con la aparición del humanismo ateo de los siglos xix y xx (Feuerbach, Bakunin, Marx, Nietzsche, Sartre). Nédoncelle y Maritain coinciden en identificar las raíces de esta nueva concepción en el problema de la relación entre naturaleza y gracia que se planteó en la teología patrística y escolástica.
Sin embargo, parece ser más bien la negativa concepción del hombre de Lutero la responsable de la antropología que subyace al humanismo ateo

The humanism arising from the Christian concept of man falls into crisis with the emergence of atheistic humanism of 19th and 20th centuries (Feuerbach, Bakunin, Marx, Nietzsche, Sartre). Nédoncelle and Maritain agree on identifying the roots of this new approach in the problem of the relationship between nature and grace which arose in Patristic and Scholastic theology. However, it seems to be rather Luther´s negative view of man that is responsible for the anthropology which underlies atheistic humanism
