Resumen de Hans Mielich at Titian's studio

Charles Hope

  • The writer presents evidence that establishes when the 16th-century Bavarian painter Hans Mielich visited Italy. An unpublished passage in a letter from the art dealer Nicolò Stoppio to Hans Jacob Fugger, written in Venice in 1567, recalls making a visit with Mielich to Titian's studio while he was painting Venus and Adonis. This painting was one of a number of works ordered by Philip of Spain from Titian early in 1551, but the only references to him working on the painting, which was sent to his patron in 1554, date from 1553. From this, it can be concluded that Mielich was in Venice at some time between 1552 and 1554, which is also the most probable date for a visit to Rome.
