  Desde los inicios de la actividad turística, artistas de las vanguardias europeas residieron en la isla de Ibiza. Buscaban un refugio de los conflictos europeos y un lugar tranquilo y barato para vivir. Estos artistas formaron una comunidad de extranjeros que creaba sus obras en la isla. Esta comunidad atrajo nuevos extranjeros interesados por el arte de vanguardia y fomentó la aparición de artistas locales. La importancia de estos artistas para la imagen de la isla llevó a que las administraciones públicas ampararan y potenciaran el arte de vanguardia. El resultado es que desde los años cincuenta del siglo XX, los artistas, las galerías y las exposiciones son un elemento habitual en los pueblos y ciudades de la isla. Algunos hitos importantes fueron el Grupo Ibiza 59 (1959), el Grupo Puget (1962), la Bienal Internacional de Arte Universitario (1964) y el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (1968), recientemente ampliado. Su importancia cuantitativa es pequeña y es muy difícil vivir de esta actividad de forma exclusiva. Pero la actividad artística y expositiva ayuda a respaldar una imagen de libertad, sofisticación y cultura buscada por muchos turistas con alto poder adquisitivo.

  From the beginnings of tourism, European avant-garde artists resided on the island of Ibiza. They sought refuge in European conflicts and quiet and cheap place to live. These artists formed a community of foreigners who created their works on the island. This community attracted new foreign interested in avant-garde art and fostered the emergence of local artists. The importance of these artists for the image of the island took to that public administrations shall protect and potentiate avant-garde art. The result is that since the fifties of the twentieth century, artists, galleries and exhibitions are a regular feature in the towns and cities of the island. Some important milestones were the Ibiza 59 Group (1959), the Puget Group (1962), the International Biennial of Art University (1964) and the Museum of Contemporary Art (1968), recently expanded. Their quantitative importance is small and very difficult to live of this activity exclusively. But the artistic and exhibition activity helps support an image of freedom, sophistication and culture sought by many tourists with high purchasing power.
