Resumen de 'Virtuous and Godly Susanna': Exemplum and Allegory

Meg Twycross

  • Using Thomas Garter's "Virtuous and Godly Susanna" as a case study, looks at the 'hybrid' plays of the mid sixteenth century as a blend of exemplum and allegory, and considers what and how each genre contributes to the play's meaning. Discusses the peculiar aptness of the Vice Ill Report to the legal setting, and asks why this group of plays seems to be addressed to a female audience. An Appendix discusses the traditional figure of Esther as suppliant queen, and why the biblical narrative might have been altered in the play of "Godly Queen Hester"
