    This work is a translation of the chapter “Descriptions – the intellectual background” serving as a complement to the chapter 5 of the book titled Exploring Translations Studies (2010) by Anthony Pym. The chapter outlines the relationship between Russian Formalism and some of the strands of the Translation Studies which emerged during the 19th century. It brings to the fore works done in Prague (Prague Circle), Bratislava, Leipzig, Holland and Flanders focusing specially on the Tel-Aviv School of Itamar-Even and Gideon Toury, the main forerunners of the Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). By analyzing this academic context, not only it describes the type of approaches those theorists suggested, but it also discusses the ups and downs of such paradigms problematizing concepts like “translation shifts”, “assumed translations” and “norms”. This translation aims at presenting and sharing Pym’s work as clearly and fluid as the original is, so that it serves as both a historical reference and an introductory text to Translation Studies.

    O presente é uma tradução do capítulo Descriptions - the intellectual background, que complementa o capítulo 5 do livro Exploring Translations Studies (2010), de Anthony Pym. O capítulo traça a ligação entre o Formalismo Russo e algumas vertentes dos Estudos da Tradução surgidas ao longo do século XIX. Passa pelos esforços realizados em Praga (Círculo de Praga), Bratislava e Leipzig e pelos realizados em Holland e Flandres, mas foca-se principalmente na Escola de Tel Aviv, onde atuam Itamar Even-Zohar e Gideon Toury, os principais proponentes dos Estudos Descritivos da Tradução (EDT). Ao analisar esse contexto acadêmico, descreve o tipo de análise proposto por esses teóricos e discute as vantagens e desvantagens desse paradigma, problematizando os conceitos de “deslocamentos tradutórios”, “traduções assumidas” e “normas”. A tradução aqui apresentada pretende trazer o texto de Pym com a clareza e fluidez que caracterizam o original, para que ele sirva tanto como referencial histórico, quanto texto introdutório aos Estudos da Tradução.
