The purpose of this paper is to show that Columella was attempting to balance quality and quantity in Italian wine production during the 1st century AD. The economics of ancient viticulture, based on the figures of Columella, have been discussed elsewhere (Duncan‐Jones, 1974; Purcell, 1985) and will not form a part of this article. In his 12‐book agricultural treatise,De Re Rustica, Columella insists that neither quantity nor quality should be sacrificed, and that old varieties, especially theAminean, should not be discarded for new, more fertile cultivars from overseas.
