El sincretismo religioso en las primeras obras de Alejo Carpentier y Lydia Cabrera

Abstract

La realidad cultural y religiosa de Cuba conserva gran parte del acervo africano que los negros esclavos llevaron consigo a la isla desde los inicios de la trata. El fenómeno de la transculturación dio origen en la isla a un proceso de sincretismo entre el universo africano y la cultura y la religión occidentales, dominantes desde los virreinatos españoles. La literatura hispanoamericana (salvo contadas y tímidas excepciones) no se hizo eco de la realidad sincrética de Cuba hasta el siglo XX, cuando Alejo Carpentier y Lydia Cabrera —envueltos en el ambiente vanguardista de las primeras décadas del siglo— llevaron a la literatura las creencias y el folclore del negro cubano, inaugurando así la narrativa afrocubana. Partiendo de ese carácter sincrético de la realidad afrocubana, los objetivos de esta investigación han sido, por una parte, analizar el tratamiento literario que reciben los sincretismos religioso, cultural y lingüístico, y las diversas manifestaciones culturales procedentes de la tradición africana en la primera narrativa afrocubana, concretamente en las obras más tempranas de Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980) y Lydia Cabrera (1900-1991). Por otra parte, investigar y aportar toda la información necesaria sobre folclore, religiones, antropología y cultura afrocubana para comprender el proceso de transculturación y sincretismo que subyace a esas obras.

Cuban cultural and religious reality still keeps a big part of the African heritage which black slaves brought to the island since the beginning of slavery. The phenomenon of transculturation originated on the isle a process of syncretism between the African universe and the Western culture and religion which dominated since the Spanish viceroyalty. Hispanic American literature (apart from a few and weak exceptions) did not reflect the Cuban syncretic reality until the XX century, when Alejo Carpentier and Lydia Cabrera —involved in the avant-garde ambient of the firsts decades of the century— took to literature the beliefs and folklore of the black Cuban people, pioneering, that way, the Afro-Cuban narrative. Starting from that syncretic nature of the Afro-Cuban reality, the aims of this research have been, on the one hand, to analyse the literary treatment of religious, cultural and linguistic syncretism, and the different cultural appearances coming from the African tradition in the first Afro-Cuban narrative, specifically in the first works of Alejo Carpentier (1904-1980) and Lydia Cabrera (1900-1991). On the other hand, to investigate and provide all the necessary information about folklore, religions, anthropology and Afro-Cuban culture to understand the process of transculturation and syncretism that lie beneath those works.
