  Il poema fisico lucreziano è corredato di numerose strutture prefato­rie, che sono state opportunamente inserite dal poeta epicureo nelle sezioni dottrinali didatticamente più impegnative (ad es. 1, 146-158. 483-502. 2, 62-79. 3, 417-424). Coerentemente con le finalità dida­scaliche del De rerum natura, le prefazioni costituiscono un aspetto del variegato magistero poetico lucreziano e svolgono precisamente la funzione di meglio predisporre le menti dei lettori a recepire gli ar­gomenti filosofici e scientifici trattati volta per volta. Da ciò consegue che le scelte stilistiche operate dal ‘poeta-magister’ o sono imposte da un registro più elevato, quale è quello consono ai proemi dei singoli libri del poema, o sono suggerite da quelle strategie didattiche, che sono specificamente richieste dalle sezioni dedicate alla esposizione della ratio epicurea.

  The Lucretian poem De rerum natura is overloaded with introductory structures (for ex. 1, 146-158. 483-502. 2, 62-79. 3, 417-424) which have been opportunely placed by the Epicurean poet in the more didactically challenging doctrinal sections. In keeping with the poet’s didactic purposes, the prefaces function as one of Lucretius’s means for effective poetic instruction and prepares the mind of the reader to better understand the philosophical and scientific matters to be discussed each time. It follows, then, that the poet-teacher’s stylistic choices are dictated either by a more elevated register, such as the one appropriate to the proems of the individual books of the poem, or are suggested by the didactic strategies specifically called for in the sections dedicated to his exposition of the epicurean ratio.
