Este ensayo es una revisión de las actividades intelectuales que Reyes planeó a su regreso definitivo a México, en 1939, y que quedaron resumidas en estas líneas. "No se trata aquí de querer traducir el presente hacia el pasado, sino, al contrario, el pasado hacia el presente. El aprovechamiento de una tradición no significa un paso atrás, sino un paso adelante, a condición de que sea un paso orientado en una línea maestra y no al azar. Por lo demás, no todo lo que ha existido funda tradición".

This essay is a review of the intellectual activities that Reyes planned for his definitive return to Mexico, in 1939, and which were summarized in these lines. "I am not talking here about wanting to translate the present into the past, but on the contrary, the past into the present. Making use of a tradition does not mean a step backward, but a step forward, provided it is a step of masterful direction, and not random chance. Moreover, not everything that exists will create a tradition".
